Product Description

1943-1945 World War II Steel Penny and Japanese 1 Sen Clay Coin Set

This World War II coin set contains two coins - one American and one Japanese - that were only produced for a short time during World War II.

The 1943 steel cent is a U.S. one-cent coin struck in steel due to wartime shortages of copper. These 1943 Lincoln cents were produced at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints. The unique composition of the coin has led to various nicknames, including "wartime cent", "steel war penny", and "steelie". The 1943 steel cent features the same Victor David Brenner design for the Lincoln cent which had been in use since the first in 1909. The steel cent is the only regular-issue United States coin that can be picked up with a magnet. The steel cent was also the only coin issued by the United States for circulation that does not contain any copper.

By the end of World War II Japan suffered from a severe shortage of metal needed to make coins.  Emergency coins were made out of clay, however the coins circulated for only for only a few days in cental Japan before the Japanese surrender on August 15, 1945. This scarce clay 1 Sen coin circulated for only a few days at the end of World War II in central Japan.  The unusual, undated 1 Sen coin features Mt. Fuji on one side and sakura blossems on the other.  The 15mm coin is made from red or brown clay.  It is quite scarce and unknown to many collectors.
