Antique 1884 Columbia Expert High Wheel Bike
Produced by Civil- War veteran and entrepreneur Albert Pope, the Columbia Expert was considered a sophisticated bicycle and sold for $130 in 1885. Quite considerable considering the average weekly laborer’s wage was $12. Known by multiple names, The High-Wheeler, as well as The Ordinary or Penny Farthing; the bike was designed in a time before chains were used. This meant the speed of the bike was largely limited by the size of the tire.
Bicycles were immensely popular in the time before the internal combustion engine became prominent, allowing a much greater degree of freedom to those who possessed one. In fact civil rights activist Susan B. Anthony once proclaimed " the bicycle has done more for the emancipation of women than anything in the world!"
