Winston Churchill Signed Letter

As seen on “Pawn Stars” a letter signed by Winston S. Churchill the British statesman, orator, and author who rallied the British people during World War II and led his country from the brink of defeat to victory! The letter is to  Mrs. Dorothy Allhusen of Chartwell, a well-known food writer who authored “A Book of Scents and Dishes and Unusual Savories”. The letter is one page, contains two corrections in Churchill’s hand and was drafted in Chartwell on July 18, 1948. The letter measures 10” by 8” and is in excellent condition. The piece has been authenticated by Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, the leading rare book and manuscripts auction house in the Midwest, and is accompanied with documentation. In the letter, Churchill thanks Allhusen for gifting him with a paperweight that once belonged to Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, 1st Earl of Beaconsfield. The letter reads in full: “Thank you so much for sending me Lord Beaconsfield’s paper weight. I am indeed glad to have this historic gift, which I will always cherish.” Churchill has added a handwritten postscript: “I keep it on my table.”

Prime Minister Winston Churchill (1874- 1965) was directly descended from John Churchill, 1st duke of Marlborough, the hero of the wars against Louis XIV of France in the early 18th century. Although achieving poor grades at school, he was fascinated with the military and joined the Royal Cavalry in 1895. As a soldier and part-time journalist, Churchill traveled widely, including trips to Cuba, Afghanistan, Egypt and South Africa. Upon his return he became active in politics. In November 1915, Churchill resigned from the government and returned to the military, seeing active service in France as lieutenant colonel of the 6th Royal Scots Fusiliers. He returned to Parliament and in January 1919 he became Secretary of War. Although he was alone in his firm opposition to Indian Independence, his warnings against the Appeasement of Nazi Germany were proven correct when the Second World War broke out in 1939. Following Neville Chamberlain’s resignation in 1940, Churchill was chosen to succeed him as Prime Minister of an all-party coalition government. With Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin he then shaped Allied strategy in World War II, and after the breakdown of the alliance he alerted the West to the expansionist threat of the Soviet Union.
