Pablo Picasso; Lysistrata
Here is chance to own a highly coveted rare book signed by Picasso himself. Picasso’s Lysistrata is “the only American publication with original Picasso etchings, which are among his most important in the classical style” (Artist and the Book 226). In the 1930’s a company called the Limited Editions Club approached Picasso to illustrate Aristophane’s Lysistrata, a satirical Greek comedy. The book includes 6 original Picasso etchings and 30 in-text lithographs. Published in 1934 on French Rives paper, it is one of the most desirable limited editions on the market today! Designed by the Club’s publisher, George Macy, he praised Picasso’s hand as “sure and confident,” and noted that the beauty of his etchings lay in their simplicity. These works are all done in a classicist style which was a departure from Picasso’s Avant Garde works that he was publishing at the time. The book is in excellent condition however there is some slight damage to the case, which many copies sell without. Highly desirable this copy is sure to go quickly, in fact if we don’t sell it soon Rick will be adding it to his own collection!
